EAWXXVI-Lilac -- Preparation

Hello all!

A few quick questions in regards to prepping:

I personally will have only a couple days between landing in the US and the workshop, so for the sake of time, efficiency, and stress, I have a few questions for the team leaders:

Based on past workshops, do you preference in presentation method(iPad, print, laptop, etc)? I've juggled the laptop/book combo in the past, but feel like I have the opportunity to ask instead of guess for this specific situation.

Also, as I'm unsure of the exact schedule of the workshop, how much work do you think is reasonable to prepare for portfolios? I have two long-term personal projects and an edit of news work in mind. Not sure if this is too little or too much, considering the time that is available for showing work.

One other tiny thing - I read Melissa Lyttle's old blog post regarding EAW and equipment we may need specific to our individual assignments. Will the assignments be set early enough to be able to get what we might need(if they haven't been already)?

I think that's all for now...maybe.

  1. Amanda. These concerns will be addressed. As producer, i set up most of those things. I need to know what equipment people have. I need to know who will have a car. Do not be concerned about the assignment. we will all be prepared.

  2. Sounds great. I'll post my answers to those two questions when it comes up, unless you'd like me to get a thread going?

  3. Hi Amanda, as far as your portfolio is concerned for showing...there will be a session daily at midnight where students can sign up to meet with professionals to look at their portfolios. A laptop or ipad is best to show your images. I have also looked at books in the past but overall two to three photo stories or about 30-40 images will be plenty. you will have about 15-20 mins max with the editor you sit with so pick your best work and spend five minutes to browse through your images and the rest for talking and feedback.

  4. Thanks for the information Gus and Adrees.

Gus - I don't have a car. However, since I understand it could be helpful to have one for assignments, I am able to get a discount from Enterprise Rent A Car in case anyone is interested in pooling resources?

    Best,
    Benjamin

  5. Thanks Gus/Adrees!

Ben - I too, will not have a car. I spoke to James awhile back, and he mentioned he might be driving up and will have one. Out of curiosity, how much would the rental be, roughly? I'm personally on a tight budget, but if there only ends up being one car between us all, it's something I guess we'll have to address.

Staff - In past workshops, in the case there is a car shortage, how is that handled?

  6. Amanda...I'm on a tight budget too and signed up to take the bus from NYC. If there is a need and a car is rented from either Watertown or Monticello, not sure how close these are to Jefferson, we might be able to get a car (depending on car size) between low $100s to low $200s.

    Best,
    Benjamin

  11. My equipment:

    Nikon D3 (x2)
17-35mm f2.8 (if theres anything available I'd rather use a 24 or 35, my 17-35 is beat up and very dusty)

    70-200 f/2.8 VRII
    85 1.8
